Putting it All Together:
This is your final lesson before your the exam. This lesson is the most important lesson because it takes all the key elements of arithmancy that we have been learning throughout the term and puts them together to make Arithmancy useful to a witch or wizard. To begin the idea discussed in this section, go back to your homework from last week. Get the numbers you calculated from “Critical Thinking”. In this case my numbers are as follows: Character is 7, Heart is 9, and Social is 7. So lets take a look at what it means.

Prof. Pendragon’s Character:
My character number is 7. According to the information from lesson 2, this means that my overall character should fit within this definition: “Perceptive, understanding, and bright, sevens enjoy hard work and challenges. They are often serious, scholarly, and interested in all things mysterious. Originality and imagination are more important than money and material possessions. Sevens can also be pessimistic, sarcastic, and insecure.”

Over all, I totally agree with this statement. It does in fact fit my personality over all. It is actually a little uncanny at how close it is to the truth.

Prof. Pendragon’s Heart:
My heart number was 9. According to Lesson 2, this means that my inner self should display the following types of character traits: “Represents completion and achievement to the fullest degree (as it is the complete number, three, expressed three times). Nines dedicate themselves to service, often as teachers, scientists, and humanitarians. Strongly determined, they work tirelessly and are an inspiration to others. However, they can also be arrogant and conceited when things don’t go their way.”

Again, my inner self does fit these qualities even more so than my character or social number.

Prof. Pendragon’s Social:
My social number is 7. According to Lesson 2, my outward self should display the following characteristics: “Perceptive, understanding, and bright, sevens enjoy hard work and challenges. They are often serious, scholarly, and interested in all things mysterious. Originality and imagination are more important than money and material possessions. Sevens can also be pessimistic, sarcastic, and insecure.”

In some instances this can predict my outward self. My social number is a little inaccurate in some areas.

Preparing for the Final Exam:
Now that you have completed all the new information, it’s time to take a look back and to prepare for your final exam. As a special treat, there is no homework for this month, this is so that you have some time to prepare for the examination and complete your project. All those students who have received an “O” in my class will be able to exempt the exam. I will post a list on the forum the day the exams starts of who is exempt. The information covered this term is very basic arithmancy.

Now, during the exam the website will be taken off the internet so you will need to know how to do this information on your own. In order to ensure that you know the information, I am giving you only 24 hours to complete this exam. When you are ready to take the exam, please eOwl me and ask for the exam. I will mark the time I send it and I will give you a zero if it is not turned into be within 24 hours.

To prepare for this exam, I would suggest going over old homework and extra credit. Expect to see multiple choice questions and essays on only the information covered in this course. I highly suggest, forming a study group for this. I would be more than happy to help set up a review game if people are interested, and I can allow for participants to earn house points and extra credit. If there are any questions please let me know so that I can help you. Thank you all for making this term so enjoyable. I hope to see you around HOL next term.

The character number indicated the general personality type of an individual. The character number is calculated by adding up all the numbers in the name and “reducing” until you get a number equal or lower than 9. To “reduce” a number to a single digit you add the component numbers together, more than once, if necessary. For example: 58 reduces to 13 (5+8=13), which reduces to 4 (1+3=4). Now lets take this idea and turn it into something useful. We will continue using my name as the example:

7

5

5

4

9

1

7

6

5

Now add up the numbers. In this case the result is 79. This seems like such a large number, but it should easily reduce down. 16 (7+9=16), which reduces to 7(1+6=7). So my character number is 7.

Heart Number:
The next number we will calculate is your Heart Number. This number represents the individual’s inner life and can indicate desires and fears hidden from others. To calculate this number we will reduce the total number of all the vowels in the name. Now we will also continue on with my name as the example.

C

H

A

R

L

E

S

P

E

N

D

R

A

G

O

N

3

8

1

9

3

5

1

7

5

5

4

9

1

7

6

5

Remember, just the vowels! The total comes out to: 18. Since this number is not a single digit it must be reduced. 9(1+8=9). Luckily for us, I only had to reduce once. So my Heart number is 9.

Social Number :
The final number that we will learn to calculate is called the Social Number. This number represents the outer personality, the face an individual shows to the outside world. To calculate this number you add up all the consenants and then reduce to a single digit. Now lets take this idea and turn it into something useful. We will again continue using my name as the example:

C

H

A

R

L

E

S

P

E

N

D

R

A

G

O

N

3

8

1

9

3

5

1

7

5

5

4

9

1

7

6

5

Remember that this time we’re adding up only the consenants. So, if my calculations are right the total is: 61. Let’s reduce it! 7 (6+1=7), and again lucky for me I only had to reduce once. So my social number is 7.

Now you will have to stick around for the final lesson to find out how to put these different numbers to use! For now, you’ll have to just settle for homework. Yes, I know, I can hear the growns now.

Lesson 2: The Meaning of Numbers

This lesson will introduce you to the meaning behind the numbers used in arithmancy.

Homework Due: October 31, 2010 @ midnight HOL time.

For this lesson we’re going to take a look at each number and their meaning. Its important to remember that not all are perfect fits and not all describe with 100% accuracy however they give us the ability to evaluate and to synthesize information that we might not have readily available to use.

The Number One :

“One… is the loneliest number that you’d ever known…” The famous song about the number one actually holds truth in Arithmancy. The number one is known for being a solitary. This means that this number represents the one-ness of self, sometimes considered to be a very selfish number, and most times this number represents the ability to complete something alone. Ones are very goal oriented and are generally self-centered, egotistical, and domineering.

The Number Two :

Two believe it or not, has two parts. Two can mean unity, harmony, and peace. It can mean great communication and cooperation. The other side of two though is just the opposite. You know how the old saying goes: “It takes two to tango”, which basically means the idea of conflict, opposing forces and contrasting views. Twos can be withdrawn, moody, self-conscious, and indecisive.

The Number Three:

Three is a complete number, or a whole number. Three is whole as in the idea that many things come in threes such as the past, the present, and the future; the mind, body, and spirit; the tricker-treating, the costumes, and the candy. Threes are generally talented, funny, and are not social awkward. Threes are lucky and go with the flow. Due to their talented nature they can be unfocused, easily get off track, however don’t let this fool you threes are very successful.

The Number Four:

Four is a solid number. Like a car with four wheels, four represents stability and firmness. Fours tend to be resourceful, logical, and predictable. They are organized to a fault and must not leave unfinished business. Fours are often compared to the four seasons. Fours however have a downside, they tend to be overly simple, prone to angry outbursts, and stubborn, in addition the conflicts found in twos tend to be doubled in fours.

The Number Five:

Five is an unstable and imbalanced number much like a 5th wheel on a double date. Five always indicated change and uncertainty and they spread themselves too thin, they often start numerous projects but can not commit to any one of them. Due to this, fives tend to be adventurous, energetic, creative, and tend to take risks. They enjoy new experiences however the thrill doesn’t last long and they must move on to the next newest thing. Fives are conceited, irresponsible, and impatient, however don’t let this draw you away from them, they are also very fun to be around!

The Number Six:

The number six represents a harmony unlike any other number. Six is also the number for groups such as friendships and family. This is because sixes tend to be loyal, reliable, and loving. Sixes are social creatures and adapt well to change (possibly a good friend with a five). Sixes love to teach and are very artistic. Sixes would do well to stay away from business because they are prone to idol gossip and complacency.

The Number Seven :

Seven is often seen as the perfect number. Seven represents scholarly activity, interest in all things mysterious, and a sense of duty and hard work. Sevens tend to be very bright and perceptive of the world around them which also allows them to be understanding as well. Money means little two sevens who highly value originality and imagination. With all of this good, sevens tend to be pessimistic, sarcastic, and insecure because they know so much and can sense so much about the world around them.

The Number Eight :

Eight represents success. The number Eight represents practicality, and simply know how in business and politics. Due to this, eights tend to be greedy, domineering, and power hungry. Don’t even let an eight pair up with a one. Eights are the absolute most unpredictable of all numbers because on one side they can represent the height of success or the absolute failure… Think stock market crash of 1929. The potential to either be the most successful or biggest failure is present from the get go and once an eight picks one of those paths they almost always follow through on it.

The Number Nine :

Nine represents perfect fulfillment and achievement. Since three times three is nine, the number nine has a special connection to 3. Nines are very special people indeed, they tend to be the caretakers of the world, the can almost always be found working in hospitals, soup kitchens, or classrooms. The are strong minded and work tirelessly until the job is completed right. They are often inspiring to others, and it is believed that saints are only nines. Due to their sense of achievement they can be arrogant and conceited and truly not mean it.

Lesson 1: Intro to Arithmancy

This lesson will introduce you to the basic principals of Arithmancy.

Homework Due: September 30, 20010 @ midnight HOL time.

What is Arithmancy?

Arithmancy is from Greek origins. The word Arithmancy comes from two Greek words which put together means “Divinations by numbers” which is exactly what Arithmancy is, the branch of divinations that deals with numbers. I prefer to think that Arithmancy is a bit more accurate then most other forms of Divinations because it is based off of tangible numbers. Another name for Arithmancy is Numerology.

Where did Arithmancy Come From?

Arithmancy has been around since the time of the Greeks and has been prominently used almost exclusively in the wizarding community for nearly 2000 years. Arithmancy has two different systems: the Agrippan Method & the Chaldeon Method. The primary difference between the two methods is that the Agrippan method uses 9 numbers in its calculations and the Chaldeon uses only 8.

Why Does the Agrippan Method Work?

The letters A-Z are assigned to numerical values 1-9 as follows:

1

2

3

4

5

6

7

8

9

R

S

T

U

V

W

X

Y

Z

In almost all cases in Arthimancy names of people are analyzed. Names can be broken down like this:

C

H

A

R

L

E

S

P

E

N

D

R

A

G

O

N

3

8

1

9

3

5

1

7

5

5

4

9

1

7

6

5

How did I get that? Well… You will definitely have to stick around and find out how for the next lessons. We will start out by learning what a character number is and how it is found then move on to heart number and then finally social number shortly before our exam.

Welcome to Arithmancy for Amateurs! This course will give a basis for the study in arithmancy. No prior knowledge is needed, however if you know about arithmancy then this class should be a breeze! I look forward to a great and exciting term as you discovery the power of numbers.

Throughout this term we will discover the magical powers that numbers hold. Each month there will be an assignment of sorts and you’ll have the opportunity to earn points for your house. If throughout this term you have any questions feel free to send me an HOL message (the best form of contact) and I should respond within 24 hours.

To earn a quill in this class, you must earn a 60% or better as a final score in the course. This means that you can miss a few assignments and still pass. As an added bonus to those that have an “O+” (100%) or higher you shall be exempt from the examination.
